Cryotherapy
What is Cryotherapy?
The demand for these procedures is high but unfortunately GPs are reluctant to do anything about benign lesions due to lack of time and restricted NHS funding.

How does it work?
Hyaluronic acid is found naturally throughout the body, including in your skin. The product is injected superficially into 5 micro specific bioaesthetic points either side of the face to achieve optimal spread within the tissues and improves overall skin quality and restores plumpness in the skin, which is lost in the aging process. Hyaluronic acid attracts and retains water, producing a volumising effect.
- Cooling Agent: The Cryo Pen is filled with a cooling agent, typically liquid nitrogen or nitrous oxide gas. These substances have extremely low temperatures, usually around -196°C (-321°F) for liquid nitrogen.
- Precise Application: The pen has a fine, precise nozzle or applicator tip, that allows us to target the specific area requiring treatment without affecting the surrounding healthy tissue.
- Freezing the Tissue: When the Cryo Pen is applied to the skin lesion, the cooling agent rapidly freezes the water within the cells of the targeted tissue. This freezing process causes ice crystals to form, damaging the cells and blood vessels in the treated area.
- Thawing and Cellular Destruction: After freezing the tissue for a few seconds, the Cryo Pen is removed, and the treated area is allowed to thaw. As the cells thaw, the disrupted tissue is gradually destroyed.
- Immune Response and Healing: Following Cryo Pen treatment, the body's immune system recognizes the damaged tissue as "foreign" and begins the natural healing process. Over time, the destroyed tissue sloughs off and the lesion falls off and new healthy tissue replaces it.
What lesions can be treated?
Cryotherapy can be used to treat a range of benign and pre-cancerous skin conditions. It is a commonly used method in dermatology for the following lesions:
- Mole Reduction
- Verruca
- Blood Spots
- Age Spot
- Common Warts
- Milia
- Plane Wart
- Skin Tags
